Taking self-promotion too far?

At Toadsquare, we are all about the business of being creative, but is there such a thing as taking promotion too far? This photographer had 400 action figures of himself made. http://www.ryot.org/video-guy-400-action-figures-made/479149 Anyone heard of other slightly over the top promos? Do you think these can help or harm you?
